Join the Historical Association, the City of Coronado, and Coronado MainStreet Ltd. at our annual celebration of historic preservation in Coronado! This year's Preservation Symposium will be held virtually on Thursday, May 12, 2022. CHA is honored to host the State of California's Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO), Julianne Polanco. The SHPO is responsible for the operation and management of the Office of Historic Preservation, as well as long-range preservation planning. The Governor appoints the SHPO, in consultation with the State Historical Resources Commission and the Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation. Ms. Polanco will introduce this year's presenting speaker, Shannon Lauchner Pries, a Historian from the SHPO's Local Government & Environmental Compliance Unit. Ms. Pries will share the State’s historic preservation initiatives, with a particular focus on historic districts. The event will also include a presentation from Tricia Olsen, City of Coronado Associate Planner, on the City's Historic Preservation Program and how to designate a home as a historic resource.

 

Julianne Polanco

On June 12, 2015, Governor Brown appointed Julianne Polanco to the position of State Historic Preservation Officer. Ms. Polanco's term of service became effective July 6, 2015. Julianne Polanco has served as a commissioner on the California State Historical Resources Commission since 2005 (for the last three years as Chair), and as Director of Cultural Resources for Lend-Lease since 2006. She was Senior Preservation Specialist at the Presidio Trust from 1999 to 2006, and Assistant to the Vice President for Programs at the World Monuments Fund from 1998 to 1999. Her professional work has also included serving as Advisor to the Chairman of California Integrated Waste Management Board, Special Assistant to the Secretary of the California Environmental Protection Agency, Trustee Emeritus of the California Preservation Foundation, member of the Board of Directors of San Francisco Architectural Heritage, and a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

 

Shannon Lauchner Pries

Shannon Lauchner Pries has been a Historian with the California Office of Historic Preservation’s (OHP) Local Government Unit since 2007.  Throughout her 15 years with the OHP Local Government Unit Shannon has served as the Mills Act Coordinator for the State of California as well as a Coordinator for the Certified Local Government Program, providing technical assistance to local governments and property owners throughout the state. With two decades of experience in California in local historic preservation, public outreach, and federal environmental compliance Shannon utilizes that experience, and lessons learned, in her efforts to assist local planners and stakeholders working together to achieve preservation-related goals for their community.

 

Tricia Olsen

Tricia has over 15 years of experience in the field of Historic Preservation in the San Diego region. She holds dual Bachelor’s degrees in History and Architectural History from the University of California at Santa Barbara, a Master of City Planning degree from San Diego State University, and is certified as a Professional Planner by the American Planning Association’s Institute of Certified Planners.  She has worked as a historic research consultant, as a Historic Preservation Planner for the Cities of San Diego and Coronado, and currently manages the City of Coronado’s Historic Preservation and Mills Act program.
